Cairo, 17 July 2022: H.E. Sameh Shoukry, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Egypt and COP27 President Designate, will meet and engage with climate and environment Ministers and high-level officials from close to 40 countries at the upcoming Petersberg Climate Dialogue on 18-19 July 2022 in Berlin.

This is the 13th edition of this annual high level climate platform founded and organized by the Federal Republic of Germany.

The 2022 edition of the Petersberg Climate Dialogue is co-hosted by Germany and Egypt in its capacity as incoming COP27 President. The proceedings will be led by H.E. Minister Shoukry and his co-host and German counterpart, H.E. Minister Annalena Baerbock.

“The window of opportunity is closing to secure a livable, stable and sustainable future everywhere on this planet,” wrote Minister Shoukry, and Germany’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Annalena Baerbock in the joint letter of invitation issued to global leaders and key delegates. The ministers wrote further, “We will build on the outcomes from Glasgow and discussions during the first semester of 2022, recognizing the new headwinds and tailwinds that the overall economic and geopolitical situation in the world presents for global climate cooperation and action.”

H.E. Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the Arab Republic of Egypt, will address the event during its high-level segment on 18 July along with Germany’s Federal Chancellor H.E. Olaf Scholz, and United Nations Secretary General H.E. António Guterres.

As COP27 President Designate, Shoukry will deliver welcoming remarks and an opening speech and moderate a ministerial discussion on the priorities and expectations for COP27. He will also follow and engage with a handful of ministerial breakout sessions designed to address key issues on the global climate agenda.

One month after the recent Bonn Climate Conference, and less than four months before the kick-off of COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, the invited ministers will deep dive on how COP27 can advance action on adaptation, loss and damage, mitigation, and just transition– recognizing the urgent need to scale-up accessible finance across all areas of action.

The high-level discussions at the Dialogue will further pave the way to COP27, with the aim of strengthening the commitment and unity of purpose of state parties from all regions. It will also consolidate the global consensus around the major issues that will be addressed at a COP dedicated to implementation by the Egyptian Presidency. The discussions will be further enriched by the contributions of representatives of civil society, youth and women’s groups, business, practitioners, and academia who are invited to participate in this year’s dialogue.

COP President Designate H.E. Shoukry and Minister Baerbock will hold a joint press conference directly after the closing of the dialogue in the afternoon of Tuesday 19 July.
